THE ANCIENT CITY OF TROY

The historical place Troia - where the cultural treasures of the East and the West united and grow with ancient epics and reach reality- is located within the provincial borders of Çanakkale and 30 km from the center, near Tevfikiye and Ciplak villages.

Troia, which is located at a very strategic point geographically, has an important location where trade routes meet between the two continents. Paris, the son of King of Troia Priamos, was assigned by God Zeus to choose the most beautiful person on Mount Ida, where the world's first beauty competition was held.

The goddesses Aphrotide, Hera and Athena are competing with the desire to take the golden apple award to be given to the most beautiful. While Hera promises Paris the kingdom of Asia and Europe, Athena promises to a victory over the Achaeans, and Aphrodite as a wife, promises the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris choosed Aphrodite as the most beautiful and after a while Sparta was sent as an envoy to meet with the king. As soon as Paris saw Helena, who is the wife of the Spartan King Menelaos, and fell in love. Helena was also influenced by Paris. Paris and Helena run away to Troia.

Thinking that his wife was kidnapped by force, Menelaos set out with a large Akha army to take Helena and start the Troia war that lasted for 10 years. It is seen as a the historical city, where a total of 9 settlement were identified, was established 5000 years ago and was occupied by various civilizations.

Troia 1 Period is between the dates of BC 3000 – 2500 and It is evaluated as Early, Medium, Young Troia 1. It is seen that copper and bronze were used in the walls and tools built in a herringbone shape specific to the period.

The Troia 2 Period is specified by the names 2a, 2b, 2c, with 3 main phases out of 7 layers which was formed like one on top of the other. Cogwheel usage has started in Troia 2. Jewelery made of gold, silver and electrons, ornaments and container forms have been found. The Troia 3 Period did not develop as much as the other periods. Troia 4 and 5 Periods is between the dates of B.C 2200 – 1800. The imported Mycenaean and Cyprus vessels found in Troy 6 and we were also faced in the Troia 7 Period. There are traces of a huge fire in the Troia 7 Period. During the archaeological researches in Troia 8, the magnificent Temple of Athena and the evidences belonging to two altar were found. The oldest of the evidence is dated as BC 7. Troia 9 was inhabited during the Roman Period. Antiquity, theater and bouleuterion with a mosaic floor in this period are quite impressive.

Archaeological evidences obtained from Troy are exhibited in Canakkale Archeology Museum and Istanbul Archeology Museum.
